How to actually keep a habit tracker past January

12 August 2026 · 6 min read

Almost everyone has abandoned a habit tracker. The problem is rarely willpower — it's friction, ambiguity, and the quiet shame of a broken streak. Fix those three and the tracker mostly runs itself.

Track fewer things than you want to

Five habits is plenty. Ten is a part-time job. When the daily check-in takes more than thirty seconds, you'll skip it, and one skip becomes a week.

Make a missed day visible but not loud

A broken streak should be information, not a verdict. Use a soft neutral colour for misses and save the bright colour for completions, so opening the sheet feels like progress rather than an audit.

Put the payoff on the same screen

A completion rate, a current streak, a 'best ever' number — seeing the aggregate is what turns a chore into a game. If you have to navigate to another tab to feel good, you won't.

Put it into practice
